Metabolism is a requirement for any living thing. The many kinds of food we eat help our bodies to have energy for all the functions is must complete to maintain homeostasis. Each person has different rates at which their metabolism is completed. There must be a sufficent amount of food brought into the body to meet the requirements of the bodily functions. Vitamins and specific molecules are essential to maintain the body as well.

Metabolism is the process in which the food is changed into an energy source. There are many chemical reactions in which the cells in the body converts the food into an energy source. Specific proteins help the body to regulate the chemical reactions in metabolism. Metabolism is a constant process that starts when we are conceived, and ends when we die. The metabolic rate is influenced by physical activity, temperature, and eating. Many enzymes throughout the digestive system help to break the food down into smaller or changed particles. After they enter cells, there are other enzymes that help to speed up and/or regulate the process. The energy that is given off of the cells is used throughout the body for energy. There are really two types of metabolism, types that can speed up processes and store energy, and types that can break down processes and use energy. Anabolism is the constructive metabolism that occur constantly in cells of the body. Anabolic reactions must occur to replace those molecules that were hydrolyzed into their component monomers. Anabolism helps to support the growth of new cells, maintain bodily tissues, and store energy for the future. The hydrolysis reactions, along with reactions of cell respiration break down monomers to carbon dioxide and water are called catabolism. Catabolic reactions are destructive and produce the source of energy for the cells. In the catabolic metabolism, cells break down large molecules to release energy which is the fuel for anabolic reactions. Also catabolic metabolism provides heat for the body, and makes it so muscles can contract for the body to move. Enzymes in the digestive system help to break the food down large molecules into smaller molecules. Enzymes help to aid the process of metabolism. The basal metabolic rate, BMR, is determined by the person's age, body surface area, and sex. The BMR is also strongly regulated by the level of the thyriod hormone secretion. Genetic inheritance may also help to determine a person's BMR. The eating behaviors are regulated, in part, by the hypothalamus.

My BMR is 1548.4, because I am 5'6", 24 years old, 160 pounds, and a female. My daily calorie needs is 1858.08. BMR which is 1548.4 * 1.2 = daily calorie needs because I do little to no exercise. I could increase my BMR by exercising more often. Even if I would walk more often, eat healthier food, or ride my bike it would help my body to be healthier. Buring more fat and gaining more muscle by exercising will help me become more fit and increase my BMR. Being a role model as a nurse is important. I need to be able to eat healthy and exercise myself if I am going to teach my patients how to be healthier. If I am seeing a patient who is extremely underweight, I might suggest to the doctor an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulemia. Eating fruits and vegtables, exercising regularly, and drinking lots of water can help anyone become a healthier person in many ways.

The product I choose to research was cinnamon. I have heard that eating more cinnamon can increase your metabolism and help you to lose weight. The ingredient that claims to increase the metabolism is cinnamon itself. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, "cinnamon can increase your metabolic rate up to 20 times its normal rate". The product cinnamon, is claiming that you must control the way insulin uses glucose in your blood. Cinnamon is claiming to help your insulin make the right decisions. Research has shown that just an eighth of a teaspoon of cinnamon can fix the efficiency of insulin. Cinnamon can help your body to metabolize carbohydrates in the form of sugars more efficiently, and this results in a reduction of the sugar levels in your blood. You can then regulate your craving for food, reduce the levels of your hunger signals and ultimately lose weight. The connection between cinnamon and weight loss is that cinnamon can enable your fat cells to respond better to your blood insulin levels, and then offer more effective burning of fat and loss of weight. Within your diet, cinnamon and weight loss go hand in hand because of the effect that cinnamon has on your insulin. Cinnamon helps with the metabolism of carbohydrates in the form of blood sugars, usually in the form of glucose. If the levels of glucose are reduced, the body has a less tendency to form and store fat molecules.

Crash diets are bad in many ways. When someone is trying to starve themselves to loose weight the metabolic rate decreases as much up to 40%. Also when someone is trying to starve themselves, the thyroxine levels fall due to a slow in metabolic rate. Fat tissue decreases its secretion of leptin which then decreases the rate that TRH, thyrotropin-releasing hormone. There are many mechanisms that are slowed down due to crash diets. Leptin causes thyroxine to decrease, and a decline in the sympathetic nerve stimulation of brown fat. Crash diets cause the opposite of what the person is trying to acheive, losing weight. The body needs to have food for energy to burn fat, and if there is no food there, the body can't work properly.
